Whatsapp has recently been working on a feature which will enable us to make calls through the App itself. It's not completely released yet. But many people managed to get it enabled on their phones. I got it last night when my friend called me from whatsapp. I've been experimenting with it since then and here are my thoughts.First of all, many people might be thinking that it's nothing new and apps like Viper and Skype have had it for years. I was one of those people till i realised how wrong i was. Many people using smartphones hardly make voice calls via Skype. It got me thinking what's the reason behind it. The main reason is that many people are not on Skype and even if they are. It's too much of a hassle to add every new user separately. Adding a call feature sometimes also complicates the UI. And since our main messaging app is whatsapp. We don't wanna open another app just to make a voice call. Even if we do make a call, there are chances that the other person might not even recieve it. Many other reasons like call quality and dropped calls is why we end up making normal phone calls instead.Whatsapp takes care of all of these issues. Out of my 252 contacts, 236 are on whatsapp and the ones which aren't are mostly landline numbers. As every one of us already have whatsapp, there is no need to install any other app for voice calls. Whatsapp has made the UI clean and simple as always. It's not at all complicated and it almost doesn't intervene in our messages. The call quality was pretty good and I got zero dropped calls even while I was travelling in a car. The phone starts ringing within half a second after dialing and there is absolutely no lag in audio.I was so impressed by this that I activated this feature in all my contacts and haven't made a single normal call since 24 hours. Whatsapp has really nailed it. Soon this feature will be available to everyone and it will change the way we make calls. Finally! via /r/www.stmag.info
