Cracked the screen across the soft keys. Bypass app?

So, I was having dinner with some friends and my Nexus 4 slid off my lap, landed on the lower right corner, sending one single crack across all 3 soft keys. BACK, HOME and RECENT APPS.

So, now I basically have to restart the phone to get out of an app and into another one. It's a bitch. I basically leave it in "messaging" since I can access both texts and calls from there. I have to wait on notifications to come in so I can swipe down to see them. But once I get in there, for example gmail, I have to wait for a text to come in to swipe back out of gmail.

I have no interest in replacing the screen since I've already done this in the past, the phone is 2.5 years old, AND there's an OPO on the way to me as I type this.

My question, is there an app, maybe that would hang out in the notifications at the top that would clear me back to my homescreen w/o having to shut my phone off continuously?
