How do the contact pictures in Hangouts work?
So I've been using Hangouts since it came out and merged my SMS with it. I have all my contacts managed on the web using the Contacts area in Gmail and don't set any pictures for my contacts.
My assumption was that it pulled their profile picture from Google+ and set them on my contact if you are following that person. So one of my friends, on their Google+ profile and my contact, shows their profile picture correctly. Within Hangouts though, it's all over the place. In the conversation list, it shows their profile picture. Within our conversation, all their previous IMs/texts have the no profile picture blue silhouette, but the indicator (that shows how far they've read) shows their profile picture.
Is this a bug or is there some way I can force the profile picture?
