KitKat 4.4.4 - Notifications on passworded lock screen

I'm new to Android and have put password protection on my lock screen (KitKat, Sony Z3 Compact). Doing so seems to stop me being able to drag down the notification bar when I am on the lock screen.

Is this correct? It works when I switch back to the default (swipe) but doesn't work for pattern or password. Is there a way to view the notification bar from the lock screen if your phone is password protected or do I need a widget such as NiLS?
