My Headphones won't work properly with HTC One M8

I recently got a new gaming headset, HyperX Cloud II to be exact. They are advertised to be able to remove the microphone and detach the headset from the USB to use them as regular headphones.

The weird thing is that it does not work on my phone unless the microphone is plugged in, when it's plugged in the audio works fine. I unplug the microphone from the headset and my M8 immediately stops detecting the headphones. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the software not playing nicely with the microphone ring on the 3.5 mm jack when there is no Mic attached.

Any ideas on how to make it work?
