Galaxy S4 randomly giving me "No Sim card inserted" message as well as GPS not being able to locate

Verizon, Galaxy S4 with Otterbox Defender Series (the three-part one. Might be commuter?). I rooted it with synergy a long time ago and never had any problems with it until a few months ago. The GPS takes forever to work and must be at a specific angle and stay in place, and if it moves even slightly, doesn't have signal anymore. I tried GPS status and FasterGPS and both did relatively nothing. I also use WAZE, though I doubt that matters much. As of recently (<1 month), I'll randomly get "Sim card not inserted". Thus far it hasn't happened while I'm in the middle of doing something, and has only happened while the phone is in my pocket or something which leads me to believe the hardware that holds the sim card may be overheating somehow? The problem fixes itself when I take off the case, take out the battery, pull out the sim card and re-insert it, but it's becoming more and more frequent and I don't exactly have a good feeling about it going further.

I've had the phone for close to 2 years and there's no upgrades on my family plan until June I believe. It's definitely out of warranty and I don't have insurance on it. Ideally, if it's as simple as getting a new SIM card I'd prefer that, but I don't want to take it to Verizon until it's my last resort because it's rooted and maybe they might throw me some kind of bone with it if I unroot it and bring it in.

Not sure if it's relevant but I might as well mention it anyway, but it also for the longest time had the Insufficient Storage Available glitch and fixed that within the last two months. Hasn't come back since and I've been downloading apps no problem. Took a bunch of cache clearing but it's fine now.
